What were Oxfam IYP2004 outcomes?

It was made clear to applicants to OIYP2004 that they were committing to a two-year program of social action and leadership development, rather than simply signing up to attend a conference.  This did not occur in 2000.  The resulting challenge is the task of effectively supporting a global network of young activists in their work for change; harnessing their skills and contributions for the realisation of the agency’s ends policies; and capturing the learning that results for the benefit of the organisation as a whole. Between 2004 and 2006, the OIYP team will implement a program aimed at achieving these results.

Continuing Support

Action partners will implement their action plans between 2004 and 2006 in their own country OIYP will continue to support them in five main ways:

  1. The Action Plan Support Program: Providing strategic support through research, assistance and advice to Action Partners;
  2. The Small Grants Program: A $160,000 per annum program to fund Action Partner projects on the basis of their potential to achieve OI SCOs;
  3. The Skills Development Program: Access to skills resources and on-line learning programs is provided to improve Action Partner effectiveness as social change leaders;
  4. Ongoing networking and alliance building initiatives: A range of communications tools such as e-groups, the website, online forums and the Voice newsletter provide opportunities for networking and alliance building;
  5. Research and Learning: The OIYP research agenda (currently being developed) has 3 domains of inquiry:
    • Models of change– how change can be achieved, what works and what doesn’t, what is most sustainable, what local conditions affect the change, how can we (and have we) best support people to achieve change;
    • Role of young people in development– how young people become involved in change, what are the issues that particularly affect young people, what impact do young people have;
    • Why and how are people empowered or dis-empowered in making change– what are the global trends or issues that most affect people either in driving them to change or preventing them from acting, what skills are most important for making change, what are the biggest obstacles to making change, what are the particular groups which are most disempowered from making change by external structures (eg Indigenous Peoples, women, sexual minorities, ethnic minorities etc)

OIYP will periodically reflect upon the progress of action plans, lessons learnt, and the impact of action partners working to create a sustainable future.

OIYP2007

The third sitting of OIYP will take place in 2007, most likely hosted by Oxfam GB.  In the next two years OIYP will work to finalise the hosting of 2007 and develop its agenda through the expanding research area.  2007 promises to be another dynamic and action focused youth forum that will create and foster synergies between the work of youth, their communities and organisations, and Oxfam’s Aims and SCO’s.
