Beats Across Borders-  November 2005 - Sydney

Produced by the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS), Beats Without Borders  is set to premiere in mid November at the Chauvel Cinema, Paddington with funds raised going to Oxfam International Youth Parliament.  Watch this space for more details!!!

Beats Without Borders tells the story of 28 young artists who were given just three weeks to create a cultural spectacular for the opening of Oxfam  International Youth Parliament in Sydney, 2004.

From the backyard percussion of Broken Hill’s Born Rattlers to the acrobatic feats of Chile’s El Circo del Mundo, Beats Without Borders is a kaleidoscope of music, song, dance and spoken word that canvasses six countries and four languages.

“We discovered that art is a human necessity…there exist lots of different cultures, but at the end of the day we all have dreams and the same needs. Art is a universal language.” – Orlando Vargas, Circo Del Mundo, Chile.

The evening will also feature a short film on the work of the Oxfam International Youth Parliament .

  Taste 2005

March 10 2005 witnessed Sydney’s top chefs serve up a night to remember and raise thousands for Oxfam’s International Youth Parliament

The annual Oxfam International Youth Parliament (OIYP) gala dinner ‘taste’ took place last Thursday night and with the help of six of Sydney’s finest chefs sixty-thousand dollars was raised in support of the Oxfam’s International Youth Parliament.

Held at the Rydges Jamison, the event was the 5th time top chefs; Darren Simpson, Peter Evans (Hugos), Ashley Hughes (Alio), Peter Van Es (Rydges Jamison), Basil Daniell (Oh Calcutta!) and Madeleine Hayes (Award Winning Apprentice Chef) donated their time, expertise and produce for the event.

This year’s ‘Young Guest Chef’ Hamish Ingham (Billy Kwong) also joined the ranks. Ingham won the 2004 Sydney Morning Herald Young Chef of the Year Award and was also the recipient of the Josephine Pignolet Award.

“It is wonderful to see some of Sydney’s most talented people come together to support world’s youth.  The funds raised will be used by OIYP to support the work of our 300 youth partners in 92 countries, like James Hallowell, who works to re-intergrate former child soldiers into society in Sierra Leone.”

Nicole Breeze, International OIYP Coordinator.
