Alysha Meg Foley

Human Rights - Australia

Since helping to establish a refugee support group in 2002, Meg has taken every opportunity to raise the awareness of young people about the treatment of asylum seekers in Australia. Meg believes that people deserve to hear the truth about the Australian Government’s current immigration policy, which she sees as being unfair and unjust. As well as speaking at schools and local forums, Meg has also been a guest speaker at several international conferences including the United National Youth Association’s conference. She is also currently at Port Headland Detention Centre gathering information about the conditions inside and listening to the personal stories of detainees. Meg sees Oxfam IYP2004 as an opportunity to share her own enthusiasm and commitment with other delegates, and learn the best methods to make things happen. Meg plans to develop educational materials and build the capacity of teachers and young people to inform public opinion. ”All people have the right to hear the personal stories – not the politics and the propaganda - that has been hidden from them” .
