Catherine Wright

Indigenous Rights - Australia

As a member of the Jagera tribe in Northern Queensland, Catherine is working from the ground up. In her hometown of Rockhampton, she works closely with families affected by domestic violence, promoting social change for Indigenous Australians.

After taking part in Oxfam IYP2004, Catherine hopes to return to her community and transform the problem of gambling into a social advantage. Not-for-profit gambling is a concept where people’s time and efforts are exchanged instead of money. This increases work opportunities as well as reducing debt and financial hardship.

As part of her ongoing work, Catherine is dedicated to identifying the causes of domestic violence and to developing healing responses for those families affected. Catherine’s creative approach to building stronger community links and her dedication and enthusiasm for Aboriginal rights will be an asset to Oxfam IYP2004.
