Roxanne Ngarulya Highfold

Education - Australia

Roxanne is a volunteer at the Danila Dilba Emotional and Social Well Being Centre, a Darwin-based health service that is managed by Aboriginal people for Aboriginal people. As an Indigenous Australian herself, Roxanne works with Danila Dilba to help raise awareness of youth health issues such as drugs, alcohol and suicide, which are a problem in her community. Roxanne has also been chosen as a member of the 2004 Chief Ministers Round Table panel for Young Territorians, run by the Northern Territory Government. She hopes to get the Round Table involved in developing programs aimed at improving the health and education of her Aboriginal community. Roxanne sees education as the best way of overcoming racism and poverty within the community.

“When they go to school, most of our Indigenous children are still classed as second class citizens”.

Roxanne wants to use her position on the Round Table and her experience as an IYP2004 delegate to address the lack of appropriate education for Indigenous youth.
